About the Justice of the Peace District 6 Constables

A constable serves the justice of the peace court in the district. State law provides for one constable for each justice of the peace court, per section 13:2583 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes. The constable sells property seized to satisfy a court judgment at public auction, per section 13:2587, and may issue summons and serve subpoenas for litter violations in the parish, per section 13:2586. Justice of the peace courts themselves hear small civil cases and act as committing magistrates in criminal matters across the parish, per the same section.

Constables are elected at the congressional election to six-year terms by the qualified voters within the justice of the peace ward, and take office on the first day of January after the election, per section 13:2583. So only voters who live in District 6 vote on these seats. Section 13:2610 sets the St. Landry Parish district lines by roads and waterways; District 6's boundary touches the eastern corporate limits of the Town of Grand Coteau, Bayou Teche, and the Lafayette Parish and St. Martin Parish lines. The Secretary of State's elected-officials list shows two constables for District 6, and this race is listed as vote for two. Louisiana's election calendar lists November 3, 2026 as the open primary date and December 12, 2026 as the open general election date, per the Secretary of State.

Judy D. Meche and Leo Meche hold the two District 6 constable seats now, per the Secretary of State's elected-officials list, and both are running. The list shows their current terms ending December 31, 2026.
