About this race

Four Democrats qualified for this seat on the November 3, 2026 ballot: Jarvis J. Claiborne, Charlee Renaud Lear, Greta Malbrough Marion and Ogden L. Pitre; voters choose one, per the Louisiana Secretary of State's certified candidate list for St. Landry Parish. Claiborne previously ran for this same Division C seat in a three-way 2023 Democratic primary that Charles Cravins won with about 60 percent of the vote, per KLFY's coverage of that race.

About the 27th Judicial District Court

The 27th Judicial District is made up of St. Landry Parish alone, per the Law Library of Louisiana's district boundary history. Under Article V, section 16 of the Louisiana Constitution, a district court hears all civil and criminal matters, and it alone hears felony cases, probate and succession matters, and cases about title to land, among others.

The court has four judges, one for each of Divisions A, B, C and D, and each judge is elected from one of the district's four election sections. Division C is elected from election section one, per section 13:621.27 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes, so voters in that section vote on this seat, not every voter in the parish. The Law Library of Louisiana's boundary history lists the precincts in each section. A district judge serves a six-year term, per Article V, section 15 of the Constitution, must have lived in the district for a year and practiced law in Louisiana for at least eight years, and may not practice law while in office, per Article V, section 24. Louisiana's election calendar lists November 3, 2026 as the open primary date and December 12, 2026 as the open general election date, per the Secretary of State.

Charles Cravins holds Division C now, per the Secretary of State's elected-officials list and the St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court's judges page. The list shows the current term ending December 31, 2026, and that judge is not among the four names on this ballot.
