About the Orange Soil and Water Conservation District

The district gives Orange County landowners and operators technical, financial and educational advice on erosion control and water quality. It offers cost-share help (typically 75 percent) for conservation practices, animal waste and nutrient management plans, stream bank stabilization, urban stormwater controls and the closing of abandoned wells, per the county's district page.

Three of the five board members are elected and two are nominated by the board and appointed by the state Soil and Water Conservation Commission. All positions are nonpartisan, per the county's board page. Voters countywide vote on the elected seats, with no primary, and the two top finishers win four-year terms that begin the first Monday in December, per state law (G.S. 139-6). In 2026 two elected seats and one appointed seat expire, per the North Carolina Division of Soil and Water Conservation. The board meets at 8:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.
