The district works with landowners on conservation: agricultural and urban cost-share, wildlife habitat, soil health, buffers, a tree program, wetlands, water monitoring, aquatic invasive species and watershed planning, per the district's program menu. The board of supervisors sets local conservation priorities and works with other local governments and state agencies.
The board has five supervisors, one for each nominating district (I to V), serving staggered four-year terms. Supervisors are nominated within a specific district, and candidates must live there, but elections are countywide and each supervisor represents the whole county, so every Wright County voter votes on this seat. Supervisors do not take part in the primaries and appear on the general election ballot. A supervisor receives no salary but is paid for pre-authorized meetings, plus expenses and mileage, per the district.
