About the Collier Mosquito Control District

The district is an independent special district of the State of Florida. It makes mosquito control plans using integrated mosquito management, a combination of methods to prevent and control nuisance mosquitoes and those that spread viruses such as dengue, West Nile and Zika. The board sets the tax rate, approves the budget, oversees the executive director and staff, and oversees how taxpayer money is spent, per the district's board page.

Five commissioners serve on the board, elected at large, in nonpartisan seats with staggered four-year terms, per the district's board page. The district covers 730 square miles of Collier County, including Naples, Golden Gate, the Estates, Marco Island, Goodland and the Immokalee area, and it was founded in 1950 to treat 6 square miles, per the district's fact sheet. It is funded by a property tax plus grants, contract treatment work and other revenue, per the same fact sheet.
