About this race

Fields are from Fort Bend County's official canvassed primary and runoff results; unopposed Texas nominees still print in November. The Democratic nominee is sitting Judge Juli Mathew: Paula M. Miller won the March 3 Democratic primary over her, but the county Democratic Party declared Miller ineligible on March 31 under the two-year county residency requirement for statutory county court judges, the First Court of Appeals denied her petition on April 23, and the party executive committee nominated Mathew on June 22 by 47 votes to 9, per the Fort Bend Independent. Re-verify against the county's November sample ballot.

What this office does

Trial court judge. A trial judge presides over criminal and civil cases at the first level: bail and pleas, motions, trials, sentencing and civil judgments. Judges are bound by state law and appellate precedent and are barred by judicial conduct rules from campaigning on how they would rule. Most states elect trial judges on a nonpartisan ballot; the term and the courts a judge may sit on vary by state.

This race. The sitting officeholder, Juli Mathew, is on the ballot.
