MacCarthy spent 23 years as an engineer, including as a lead systems engineer at Northrop Grumman and TRW and five years advising a Pentagon official on technology policy, per the campaign site. He later directed the University of Maryland's systems engineering program and taught physics at Wofford College, and holds a Ph.D. in biophysics and biochemistry from Notre Dame, per the campaign site.
