About this race

This nonpartisan-format seat opened when the previous judge, elected in 2018 and reelected in 2024 to a term running through 2030, retired from the bench in June 2026, per the Delaware Gazette. Nickolas K. McCoy and Emma Mirles-Jones filed by the August 10, 2026 deadline to compete in the November special election for the balance of that term; the county's certified list carries McCoy's filing as a Republican petition candidate and Mirles-Jones's as a Democratic petition candidate, but Ohio prints no party label for judicial races.

What this office does

Trial court judge. A trial judge presides over criminal and civil cases at the first level: bail and pleas, motions, trials, sentencing and civil judgments. Judges are bound by state law and appellate precedent and are barred by judicial conduct rules from campaigning on how they would rule. Most states elect trial judges on a nonpartisan ballot; the term and the courts a judge may sit on vary by state.

This race. Nonpartisan: candidates appear without party labels.
