About the New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District

Its job is to plan, coordinate and carry out a conservation program within the district, and its board sets local soil and water conservation priorities based on the district's needs, per the county's board page.

Each district is run by a five-person board: three supervisors are elected in a nonpartisan election run by the county board of elections at the same time as the regular county election, and two are appointed by the state Soil and Water Conservation Commission on the local board's recommendation. All serve four-year terms, per the county's board page. The board also has an associate supervisor. The elected seats are voted on countywide, and two seats are up in 2026.
