The seat was open after Republican incumbent Randy Parks withdrew to run for the Kansas House of Representatives. At the August 4, 2026 primary, Mike Sullivan won the Republican nomination over Dawn Varney, 1,478 votes to 625, per the Hutchinson Post's report on the county's primary results. Sullivan meets Democrat Carol Moore on the November 3 ballot.

Since retiring he has volunteered as a VITA tax preparer and run a small lawn-mowing business, and previously served as a Republican precinct committeeman, per the same report.
