Rhett served as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for more than 25 years before retiring at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, and later worked as a vocational and educational coordinator helping homeless individuals, per the campaign site. He holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Georgia and continues to work with Cobb County School District's adult education programs, per the campaign site. He is a sitting state senator running for re-election to Georgia Senate District 33, per the campaign site.
