The district is a local government agency, created in 1947, that controls mosquitoes across all 893 square miles of Manatee County. Its work includes ground and aerial spraying, treating standing water where mosquitoes breed, daily counts and trap collections, weekly testing of sentinel chickens to watch for mosquito-borne disease, and follow-up on residents' complaints, per the district and a 2023 review commissioned by the Florida Legislature's Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability.
