Bonano served 28 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel with roles in human resources, civil affairs, psychological operations and inspector general work, including deployments to Iraq and a role training the Afghan National Army in Afghanistan, per the campaign site. She also served as a Joint Staff plans and policy officer at the Pentagon focused on human rights advocacy in the Western Hemisphere, per the campaign site.
