Biography

Robert Luna is the incumbent Los Angeles County sheriff, seeking a second term in the November runoff after leading the June primary with about 44% of the vote. The former Long Beach police chief was elected in 2022 on a reform platform and emphasizes department accountability, jail reform, and violent-crime reduction.

Villanueva is a 36 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department who served as the 33rd Sheriff from 2018 to 2022, overseeing about 18,000 sworn and professional staff, per the campaign site. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the California Air and Army National Guards, he holds a doctorate in public administration from the University of La Verne, per the campaign site.
