Smith was raised in SeaTac by an adoptive family; his father was a ramp serviceman and Machinists' Union member at Sea-Tac Airport, per the campaign site. He earned a political science degree from Fordham University while working nights loading UPS trucks, and later a law degree from the University of Washington, per the campaign site. He worked as a Seattle prosecutor and judge pro tempore before serving in the Washington State Senate and, since 1996, in the U.S. House representing Washington's 9th District, where he has led the House Armed Services Committee, per the campaign site.
